Summer Tree Care Do's & Don'ts

Here's a few tips for taking care of your trees during the hot summer months.

Watering Requirements
Hot summer days can be stressful for trees. Are they getting enough water or too much water? Make sure your trees are well hydrated during the summer. Just like flowers, you should be aware that some tree species may require more water than others. Check the soil condition. If it's too dry, trees may need watering. If heavy rains pass through the area and the soil looks saturated, don't water until necessary.

Trees Need Mulching
Mulching around your trees helps the ground to hold moisture and it's a good way to fertilize young trees through a slow-release of nutrition. Mulch helps to moderate soil temperature which helps strengthen tree roots and promote growth..

Inspecting Trees for Damage & Pests
Trees are very active during summer months. They aren't the only things active; insects also are very active which makes summer a good time to inspect trees, bushes, and flowers for infestations that could be causing damage, Check for browning leaves which might be an indicator of dehydration, over fertilization, or disease.

Storm Damage
If your trees have received storm damage from flooding, lightning or high winds, be sure to trim broken limbs, etc.

Summer is Not the Time of Year to Prune Trees
Summer is the time of year that trees look their best showing shiny green leaves. Over pruning can be stressful for a tree. Hold off until late fall or early winter to prune trees. That's when they are dormant and less likely to get stressed .

Summer is Not the Time for Planting New Trees
Too much rain, draughts, storms and the heat are stressful on adult trees. If a young tree becomes stressed during the summer, it may not make it through the winter. Wait to plant in the spring or fall.
