During times of heavy snow, your trees might become damaged. The weight of heavy snow could cause limbs to break or the tree to fall. How you care for storm-damaged trees and shrubs could affect their future health.

You can’t do much to help the damaged trees until the snow melts. If the limbs are bent but not broken, there is a good chance they will recover without special care.

When the snow has melted, check the damage. If you see that half or more of a tree’s limbs are damaged …. broken, you should consider having the tree removed since there won’t be much hope for recovery. However, if only small limbs and branches are damaged, the tree will likely make a full recovery.

We have a lot of tall pines in our area. If the pine tree trunk is broken, sadly the tree should be removed. Pines and some other types of trees have central leaders that extend to the top of the tree. When the truck on these trees breaks (fails), they won’t recover.

If you find that recently planted trees (young trees) have fallen over there is a good chance they can be saved. Start by covering any exposed roots as soon as possible. Covering them will protect them from drying out and/or freezing.

Remove fallen trees whose trunks measure over 10-12”. If you find a tree is partially uprooted, more than a 1/3 of their roots, it should be removed.

that a tree might fall?

The weather is more unpredictable than ever. Heavy rain, high winds, flooding, and even draughts often bring trees down. Do you know how stable the trees on your property might be?

Twelve things to look for:

1. Dead Branches
Dead branches could be a sign that the tree might have root rot. Root rot often stops the tree from getting nourishment to its leaves and branches. This causes the tree to drop branches in order to provide nutrients to other parts of the tree.

During storms, wind gusts can cause dead tree branches or the entire tree to fall causing injury to the home and its occupants. It doesn’t always take a storm for a dead branch or tree to fall.

2. Rotten Tree Roots
It isn’t always obvious that a tree has rotten roots since you can’t see below the ground’s surface. However, you can look for dead branches, falling leaves (out of season) and mushrooms growing around the tree’s base. Mushrooms could be an indicator that the tree has fungus. Fungus can be a sign that the tree roots are rotting which weakens the tree.

3. Hollow Spots in a Tree Trunk
Think of trees like our teeth. Trees get cavities due to decay within the tree which could be caused by improper pruning. As the cavity grows, the tree trunk is weakened. Eventually the tree won’t be able to support itself and it may lose limbs, or the tree will collapse.

Look for good, solid wood around the cavity; it might be a sign that the tree won’t drop limbs or fall.

4. Big Cracks in the Tree

If you see cracks or missing patches of bark on a tree, it could be a sign that the tree is dying. A tree loses its stability when its tree trunk is weak from infection. If you see cracks in a tree, it’s time to call a tree expert to diagnose, treat, or remove the tree.

5. The Tree Leaves are too Close to its Trunk

A healthy tree’s leaves should always fall from the outside in. Look at your tree and if you see that leaves are missing near the tree trunk, it could be a sign that the tree is weakened. Nutrients and water are delivered to the tree from its root zone. So falling leaves from the inside could be a sign that there is a problem in the root zone and strong winds could cause the tree to fall.

6. Are the branches growing in a “U” shape or “V” shape?
Healthy tree branches grow in a “U” shape. If the branches are growing in a “V” shape, it could be a sign of a problem since there may not be enough space for proper growth. When the trees are loaded with leaves, it may be difficult to see if the branches are forming a “U” or “V” shape. As trees shed their leaves in the fall and winter you should be able to get a better view. Trees with a weak fork will tend to drop branches.

7. Leaning Trees
Where trees grow close together, some trees may tend to lean to get more sunshine for its leaves. If this is the case, the tree may not be in danger.

If your tree is leaning 15 degrees or more, it could be due to wind or root damage. Consult with a tree expert as it may be time to remove the tree.

8. Tree Soft Spots
Soft posts appear due to infestation, fungi, or a wound which creates tree stress. If you find soft spots, you should contact a tree expert who has the knowledge and tools to treat the tree.

9. Fungus Growing on Trees
Wounds in a tree open the door to fungi. Infected trees will fall after symptoms start showing. What to look for? Yellow and browning leaves, root rot and slower tree growth. You might see some branches are dying or wilting before the tree falls.

10. Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants don’t damage trees but they do take advantage of a weak tree by tunneling through damp and damaged wood. By chewing, they cut tunnels to form nests, resulting in colonization of the tree. When this happens, the tree can’t heal and rots. There are several steps to rid the tree of infestation. But first you must decide if the tree is worth saving. We can evaluate and provide a solution.

11. Lightning Strikes
If lightning strikes a tree, the tree can be damaged internally. Lightning can travel under the bark; the tree will look normal, and it could take weeks before the tree shows deterioration. If the tree is struck on the outer layer, you should see cracking in the area of the trunk, blackened areas, and wilted leaves. Lightning strikes can weaken a tree or kill it.

12. Vine Covered Tree
When vines cover the ground, a thick blanket covers the root. Wet leaves covering the area can be the start of bacterial disease. Leaves trap moisture under the vines resulting in severe structural damage. Vines block much needed sunlight. You should kill the vines or remove them from the tree to save it.

Exposed Tree Roots & What You Should Do to Protect the Tree

Why are my tree’s roots above ground?

Tree roots normally grow 12-18” below ground. Rain, runoff, and wind can erode the soil around the roots exposing them. If trees are crowded and don’t have enough space for its roots to spread, roots will move to the surface. Also, a lot of foot traffic around the root zone could pack down the soil so that it exposes the tree’s roots.

Exposed tree roots can be damaged by lawn equipment. Knicks and cuts to the root system can expose it to insects and disease. Damaged roots won’t be able to efficiently collect the water and nutrients needed to thrive.

What to do about exposed tree roots?

Don’t rebury them with more soil. Packed soil could hinder the feeder roots from getting needed oxygen.

A much better option would be to spread mulch over the exposed roots. The mulch will help cushion and insulate the roots and keep foot traffic and mowing equipment from the area.

Suggested mulch to use is organic such as wood chips or shredded wood. Spread the mulch evenly, 3 to 4 inches deep. Be sure to spread it to cover the area of exposed roots including the lawn, if needed. Mulch surrounding the tree makes for a healthier environment than grass.

Be sure to keep mulch away from the trunk’s bark. Piled mulch against tree bark can lead to rot or disease. Be sure to spread the mulch evenly and watch for mulch decay and thinning. If you see the mulch thinning, spread more and make sure it isn’t more than 3” to 4” deep.

Sod has many benefits:

A sod lawn produces an "instant lawn". The most popular benefit to sodding is the fact that there is no lingering wait to be able to enjoy a gorgeous green yard. Taking care of your trees during the cold months will help them be their best in spring.

Mulch

Spread composted organic mulch under your tree in the fall. Doing so will help reduce extreme temperature in the soil. A thin layer of mulch will act like a blanket providing some protection to the tree’s roots.

Water

Trees need water during winter droughts. Plan to water trees, especially young trees, when the soil and trees are cool. Do not water when they are frozen.

Preventing Tree Injury

Just like flowers, you should be aware that some tree species may require more water than others. Check the soil condition. If it's too dry, trees may need watering. If heavy rains pass through the area and the soil looks saturated, don't water until necessary.

Mulching around your trees helps the ground to hold moisture and it's a good way to fertilize young trees through a slow-release of nutrition. Mulch helps to moderate soil temperature which helps strengthen tree roots and promote growth..

Inspecting Trees for Damage & Pests

Trees are very active during summer months. They aren't the only things active; insects also are very active which makes summer a good time to inspect trees, bushes, and flowers for infestations that could be causing damage, Check for browning leaves which might be an indicator of dehydration, over fertilization, or disease.

3 Reasons Why Tree Stumps Should Be Removed As Part of Tree Removal

Not removing a stump after a tree has been cut down could result in issues with safety and liability, unwanted tree growth, and an invasion of insects.

Let's start with Liability

Children playing or people moving about your yard could trip over roots growing from the stump resulting in an injury.

Winter can be stressful for trees, especially young trees. Young trees haven't developed a mature defense system such as a spreading root system or thick bark to protect them from the cold. Here's a few tips on how to care for your trees this winter.

Don't Forget to Add Mulch

Plan to add a thin layer of mulch (2 inches or less) in late fall to early winter. Spread organic mulch below the tree's drip line. as it will insulate the soil and tree roots. Insulation is important because of extreme shifts in temperature and it will slow down water loss from soil. Be careful to avoid piling mulch directly against the tree trunk. Wait to mulch until the ground freezes to prevent mice and other varmints from nesting.

Be Sure to Water Trees in the Fall

Keep trees, especially newly-planted ones, well-watered through fall. Stop watering when the ground freezes.

Wrapping a Tree

During the winter, sun thaws a tree trunk by day and it freezes during cold night air, This type of activity can cause bark cells to split. We suggest protecting your trees by:

Covering the trunks with crepe paper tree wrap.
Start by working from the bottom up by wrapping the trunk.
Be sure to overlap layers by one-third. and stop wrapping just above the lowest branches.
Remove the wrap in spring.

Snow Melt

If you use rock salt, be sure to keep it away from trees as it will adversely affect the roots' ability to absorb water, oxygen and nutrients. Instead of rock salt, choose ice melt products that contain calcium, potassium or magnesium chloride.

Clearing Snow

Clearing snow from tree branches can help eliminate breakage. To remove snow, gently push it off limbs using upward movements. Do not try to break off accumulated ice on tree branches.

During the winter, you should inspect your trees because you will be able to see the tree's structure and identify problem branches. Pruning during a tree's dormant time can also prevent spread of disease.

Is it time to Hydroseed your yard?

Have you driven by an area that’s been hydroseeded and wondered what it is and how a big patch of green spray on dirt turns to lush grass in a few weeks? If your lawn is suffering with bare spots, thin grass or no grass, it may be time to hydroseed.

Now is the time to start thinking about Aerating and Overseeding!

After a warm and dry summer, your lawn may benefit from aeration and overseeding, and fall is the best time to consider it! Over the summer grass clippings, dead roots, and other materials build up in your lawn and create a layer of thatch. Thatch becomes like a sponge at the top layer of the soil and absorbs all of the nutrients and water before they reach the roots of the grass. Aeration works by removing small round plugs from the top layer of the soil. This breaks apart the thatch and creates space for oxygen, fertilizers and other important nutrients to make their way to the roots of the turf. Overall, the aeration process will make your turf healthier and more prepared for the winter ahead. Along with aeration, we provide an overseeding option. After aeration is the best time to plant new grass seed.

Your lawn may also be suffering from bare spots and soil compaction. In this case we offer a slice seeding option to help rejuvenate your lawn and get it in the best shape possible. With the cooler temperatures of fall coming it is the optimal time to promote new grass growth in your lawn.

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is typically used on commercial projects but it can also be used on residential lawns. It involves preparing the ground and spraying a wet mixture onto the ground. Here’s what’s in the mix:

Water
Seeds such as grass seeds or wildflower seeds
Fertilizer
Fibrous mulch often consisting of wood or paper
A tacky substance that will help the mixture stick to the ground
Dye which results in an area covered looking green

The seeds, fertilizer, mulch, and water play the same roles as when you plant grass the old-fashioned way. Water provides moisture needed for seed germination. The fertilizer helps stimulate root growth. And the mulch helps to hold the moisture in the soil so, the seedlings don’t dry out. Almost any kind of grass seed can be used.

What are the benefits of hydroseeding?

For large commercial projects like highways, there are obvious advantages over other methods of establishing grass.

The hydroseeding process is fast. A large area can be covered much faster than if sod is put down.
The hydroseeding mixture can be sprayed into areas that are difficult to reach such as corners.
The mixture can include the preferred seed for the project.
Hydroseeding equipment can be used from a distance so the ground that’s prepared for new grass isn’t compacted.
New construction projects with nearby slopes are easier to seed with hydroseeding.
If the area that needs seeding is exposed to high winds, hydroseeding is the preferred method because the wet mixture sticks to the ground.

The Hydroseeding Process

Like sodding or planting grass, you will need to prepare the ground. Start by

Tilling the ground and remove rock and debris.
Improving the soil by adding organic matter to help hold moisture, adding nutrients.
Smoothing the soil to grade with a rake and lightly firm the soil.
Applying the seeds .... with hydroseeding, the soupy ingredients are mixed in the hydroseeding machine, with the grass seeds added last, just before the mixture is sprayed on the ground.
Once the seeds are on the ground, you will need to follow the same sort of watering schedule you use for traditional methods of seeding grass.

Watering Tip: If you need to water the area two or three times a day, water lightly being careful to avoid forming puddles of water. Your goal should be to keep the area consistently moist to promote seed germination.

How will I know when it's time

to remove a tree?

Removing a tree can be both an emotional and financial decision. If you find a dying tree on your property that isn’t a danger to structures, people or pets, you could choose to let it die in place. Why? Wildlife, including woodpeckers, often find food and a place to nest in dead trees. Consider the following:

What is the tree’s health?

If you see that 50% of the tree is damaged, then the tree should be removed. Even though it can survive for many years, its appearance could be adversely affected by abnormal growth.

Is there trunk damage or is the tree hollow?

Look for vertical cracks, dead branches or stubs, and internal decay. You should also look for damage to the main trunk. If the damage is severe, the tree should be removed. However, if tree trunk damage is less than 25% of its circumference, the tree might heal. However, the tree should be removed if 1/3 of the interior of the tree is hollow or rotten.

Does the tree have large dead branches and are all dead limbs on the same side of the tree?

If a large tree has had their tops broken or if there are large damaged limbs, there is a risk of them falling and injuring people, pets or damaging your home, cars, or boats. If all of the dead branches are on the same side of the tree, the tree could become off-balance and hazardous. Often dead branches on the same side could be a sign of root or trunk damage. Is the tree leaning?

Trees grow towards the light while preferring to grow upward but will grow at various angles to avoid shade created by other trees and plants. However, if a tree starts to appear to be on a decline and begins to lean, this might be due to unstable roots and the trunk and branches might be weakened and cause the tree to fall.

Here's three more things to consider when making the decision to remove a tree.

If a tree is removed, will its removal improve the growth of nearby trees?

Does the tree block line of sight for traffic flow, lights, and signs?

Does the tree have historic or sentimental value? If so, you might consider trying to salvage the tree keeping in mind that if there is a great deal of damage, it should be removed.

Why Pruning Your Trees

It’s almost that time to start getting your yard ready for the warmer weather and the summer storms that come with it. A tree should be refreshed at least once a year to remove dead or unhealthy limbs. Removing these limbs will help to benefit the tree.

Benefits of Pruning

Pruning your trees is the best thing that can be done to help a tree stay healthy. We recommend that this is done once a year before budding season is in full swing.

Removing damaged or unhealthy limbs increases plant health.
Removing these limbs allows for more sunlight to reach the tree.
Removing dead or damaged limbs will increase your safety.
Removing old limbs will increase the growth of new ones.

Are Your Planting Habits Helping or Hurting Your Trees?

There is nothing better than planting a tree and watching it grow over the years. That is if you follow the correct steps to have a healthy tree. Unfortunately, there are a lot of trees that don’t live to their potential because all the tree care steps aren’t followed correctly. We want you to be able to have a picnic or read a good book under this tree one day … so follow these recommended steps!

1) THE HOLE

The hole for your tree needs to be 2-3 times as wide as the tree’s root ball. Place the tree in the hole carefully, keeping the root ball intact.

Center the tree in the hole with the best side facing in the direction you’d like. Be sure not to plant the tree too deep into the hole. The root flare at the base of the trunk should be just above ground level.

2) THE FILL

Once the tree is positioned where you’d like, start filling the tree with soil. Be sure to keep the tree standing straight up. Continue to fill the hole and pack in the soil. You want to avoid pockets of air.

3) WATER

After planting your tree water it once a day for the first few weeks. Following that water it once a week. If you have a lot of rain in one week you should avoid watering it to prevent over watering. If it is very dry outside, water your tree twice a week. Most trees come with a tag that has watering instructions. Every tree is different so be sure to check the tag for the best results.

4) MULCHING

After planting and watering your tree, spread 2-4 inches of mulch around it. Keep a 3 foot diameter around the tree, avoiding the volcano habit. It is important not to have any mulch touching the base of the tree. This allows for the roots to breathe.

5) MONITOR YOUR TREE

Like we said before, keep an eye on the weather and adjust your watering schedule based on that. The warmer the weather the more you’ll want to water your tree. The wetter it is outside, the less you’ll water your tree. You want to keep the soil and mulch MOIST – but not soggy. Water your tree slowly, giving it time to absorb the water.

6) FEEDING YOUR TREE

Would you give a child under the age of 1 a can of soda? No because you want the child’s brain to only receive the nutrients it needs (unlike Coke). Resist the urge to fertilize your tree. These chemicals can sometimes do more harm to your tree than good. Wait at least a year before fertilizing it.

MISTAKES OF TREE PLANTING

1) LOCATION

Location and placement is key. There are many factors that go into planting and having a beautiful and healthy tree. There are some things that you need to think about before planting your tree.

How tall and wide is the tree going to get?
How much sun/shade does it need?
What are the soil requirements?
Will it create a mess in your driveway or back patio?

2) TOO SMALL OF A HOLE

Digging a hole that is too small can be harmful your tree. The main contributor to a healthy tree is healthy roots. A tree’s roots can grow 2-3 times as wide as the roots ball. Be sure to research and estimate how large your tree will grow.

3) PLANTING TOO DEEP

Putting your tree too deep into the ground can lead to your tree suffocating. The root flare at the base of the trunk should be just above ground level.

4) NOT WATERING ENOUGH

New trees like a lot of water for the first year or two. Try to plan a regular watering schedule for your tree. This will help to keep your tree healthy and growing for years to come.

The storm is gone. Now what?

The wind storm this past weekend was intense for anyone living on the East Coast. With winds getting up to 40+ mph and gusts up to 70mph, majority of us had some type of damage to our home or property. Many people were left without power or fallen trees on their property.

We are five days following the storm and many families are still recovering. However, power has successfully been restored to the tri-county area. “The wind storm that hit our area beginning Friday morning caused more damage to SMECO’s electric system than any hurricane or winter storm we’ve experienced in the past six years,” said Austin J. Slater, Jr., president and CEO of SMECO. “The damage to SMECO’s system has been severe and widespread, affecting customers across the entire service area. In total, we experienced 114,000 customer interruptions. We’ve not had this much damage to our system since the derecho that hit in the summer of 2012.”

To say the least, this storm was more than destructive. Between the large number of fallen trees and power outages, people are left unsure of where to begin. First, lets address the fallen and damaged trees in your yard.
